Anaphors in German and English Stefanie Dipper, Christine Rieger, Melanie Seiss, and Heike Zinsmeister 1 Ruhr-University Bochum, 44780 Bochum, Germany 2 University of Konstanz, 78457 Konstanz, Germany Abstract. Abstract anaphors refer to abstract referents such as facts or events. Automatic resolution of this kind of anaphora still poses a problem for language processing systems. The present paper presents a corpus-based comparative study on German and English abstract anaphors and their antecedents to gain further insights into the linguistic properties of different anaphor types and their distributions. To this end, parallel texts from the Europarl corpus have been annotated with functional and morpho-syntactic information. We outline the annotation process and show how we start out with a small set of well-defined markables in German. We successively expand this set in a cross-linguistic bootstrapping approach by collecting translation equivalents from English and using them to track down further forms of German anaphors, and, in the next turn, in English, etc. Abstract anaphors refer to abstract referents such as facts or events. Anaphoricity in Connectives: A Case Study on German
Anaphoric connectives are event anaphors (or abstract anaphors) that in addition convey a coherence relation holding between the antecedent and the host clause of the connective. Some of them carry an explicitly-anaphoric morpheme, others do not. We analysed the set of German connectives for this property and found that many have an additional nonconnective reading, where they serve as nominal ...
متن کاملEvent anaphors – a unified account ?
This paper is concerned with different types of event anaphors in English and to some extent also in Swedish. The point of departure is the seminal work of Hankamer and Sag (1976) where two major classes of anaphors are suggested, namely surface anaphors and deep anaphors. An important distinction is that surface anaphors, such as the VP-ellipsis, demand a linguistically realized antecedent, wh...
متن کاملPronominal Anaphora Resolution in KANTOO English-to-Spanish Machine Translation System
We describe the automatic resolution of pronominal anaphora using KANT Controlled English (KCE) and the KANTOO English-to-Spanish MT system. Our algorithm is based on a robust, syntax-based approach that applies a set of restrictions and preferences to select the correct antecedent. We report a success rate of 89.6% on a training corpus with 289 anaphors, and 87.5% on held-out data containing 1...
متن کاملThe Transfer of Anaphors in Translation
This paper adopts Government-Binding (GB) Theory and some Chinese-specific conditions to explain the various uses of anaphors such as the reflexive, pronoun, PROi trace, pro and variable in Mandarin Chinese. The transfer of each anaphor is specified for Chinese-English and EnglishChinese machine translation systems. We identify the situations in which the coreferential relationship between an a...
متن کاملAnnotating abstract anaphora
In this paper, we present first results from annotating abstract (discoursedeictic) anaphora in German. Our annotation guidelines provide linguistic tests for identifying the antecedent, and for determining the semantic types of both the antecedent and the anaphor. The corpus consists of selected speaker turns from the Europarl corpus. To date, 100 texts have been annotated according to these g...
